early life kalyani hails from the hills and swamps of the wayanad district of southern thavnair. her mother, of the ezhava clan, was a distiller, while her father was a minor bureaucrat in the regional capital of ambukuthy under the local kunnalakkon. during her childhood, wayanad was bustling, and the peasants were mostly happy. kalyani's family was well off for non-nobility, and her parents drilled into her the importance of education. she learned to read, to write, and to speak hannish.upheaval kalyani excelled at studies, and planned to enter the bureaucracy. however, her opportunity was cut short: the satrapy disapproved of the independent attitude the kunnalakkon was showing, and sent the military in to occupy the region. the kunnalakkon was exiled, land was confiscated from the peasants and given to zamindars, and hannish was promoted above the local language. kalyani took a position with her mother at the distillery, but she was bitter about her lost opportunity. she was present at the founding of the wayanad independence movement, quickly making a name for herself as a thought leader, a voice for the lower class and women of the region.rebellion unable to suffer the abuses of the zamindars much longer, the peasantry of wayanad rose up, displacing or executing many of the zamindars, especially in the more rural areas of the district. kalyani supported the movement from the shadows, using her business connections to import weapons and other supplies from overseas. while, in some ways, the movement was successful, a faction still fights on, seeking the liberation of all workers in wayanad, thavnair, and the world.the noose the satrapy's bureaucracy, concerned that the peasant's movement may spread to the rest of the nation, started to target the leaders of the bustling movement. kalyani, designated "suspect 32" by the government, sought to protect herself and her comrades by imposing a self-exile on herself, fleeing to la noscea, making a name for herself as a skilled trader and alcohol brewer. however, she continued funneling weapons, money, and literature to the rebels back home. most importantly, she became enamored with the work of ishgardian exile carloman de marxois, eventually seeking him out and gaining an audience, forming a friendship with him. armed with new ways of thinking, she seeks passage back home to finish what they've started.
